Hundreds of travelers were asked to leave sections of the airport around midday on March 8 as authorities assessed the situation. For many passengers, the sudden change meant rolling suitcases back outside and waiting for updates under uncertain circumstances.
By mid-afternoon, airport officials said the situation had eased and the terminals were reopened.
A Precautionary Evacuation
The disruption began at about 11:50 a.m. local time, according to local reports.
Officials with the Kansas City Aviation Department said sections of the terminal were cleared as a precaution while investigators looked into a potential threat.
Airport police worked alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation to determine whether there was any real danger.
While the investigation was underway, flights arriving and departing from the airport were temporarily grounded. Ground traffic heading toward the airport was also diverted.
Videos shared by local news outlets showed large groups of passengers walking away from the terminal with luggage in tow. Other travelers could be seen gathered on the tarmac, waiting for instructions as officials assessed the situation.
Operations Gradually Resume
Just after 2 p.m., airport officials shared an update on social media confirming that the terminals had reopened.
Authorities did not immediately release details about the nature of the potential threat or what triggered the evacuation.
Even so, the precautionary measures caused several hours of disruption for travelers moving through one of the Midwest’s major airports.
